Apple iOS (formerly iPhone OS) is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple Inc. specially for its devices. It is the operating system that presently powers many of the company’s mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. It is the second most popular mobile operating system globally after Android.

By March 2018, Apple’s App Store has more than 2.1 million iOS applications, 1 million of which are native apps for iPads. These mobile apps have also been downloaded more than 130 billion times.

In 2005, when Steve Jobs began planning the iPhone. He had a choice to either shrink the Mac, which would be an epic feat of engineering, or enlarge the iPod. The operating system was unveiled with the iPhone at the Macworld Conference & Expo on January 9, 2007. It was also released in June of that year. The iOS App Store was opened on July 10, 2008 with an initial 500 applications available.
